Would be willing to rent the place for five hundred dollars cash. Tells him that he met a fellow from Philadelphia who would be in with him to finance all the expenses. Goes on to say that he has about thiry to fourty thousand dollars.

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901). He became a well-known reader of his own poems and lecturer of idealistic views, but his creative output for remainder of life ...
